What I Eat In a Day #7: Marrakesh Edition

Hi all!

Here is my Marrakesh edition of what I eat in a day. In France we have this cliché about Maghreb Cuisine: we think it is full of sugar, pastries and oil. Not that good for your health. Well French are very wrong.

Moroccan Cuisine is all I like:

  • Full of seasonal, fresh , local vegetables and fruits
  • A lot of fresh herbs and spices which give a wonderful flavor to everything
  • And wonderful pastries, eaten not everyday, mostly on the week-ends and for special occasions

But I chose to show a day where I clearly went overboard during that week of vacation. This time, there is a little bit of regrets about things I ate without really enjoying them.

Here is a reminder of my commitment to you regarding my “What I Eat in a Day” posts, I will:

  • share everything that I ate for the day (including the chocolate, pastries and “carpe-diem” meals)
  • include full recipes as much as possible (if homemade)
  • try to tell you my opinion about my day of eating (was it balanced ? if not, what will I do to compensate on the next day ?)

WHAT I EAT IN A DAY #7 – MARRAKESH EDITION

FOOD FOOD
BREAKFAST – 9:30 am

  • a full Moroccan “Beldi”(traditional) breakfast which include:
    • a Msemen (kind of flatbread), finished it
    • a “thousand holes” style pancake, finished it
    • a little semolina biscuit, ate a quarter of it
    • It came with butter and honey, I just took a little bit of honey but did not touch the butter
  • a freshly squeezed orange juice
  • a fresh mint tea with a bit of sugar

 

 

MID MORNING SNACK – //
  • nothing, I was full from breakfast

 

 

LUNCH – 1 pm

  • Starter : no starter this time
  • Main : Roasted fish and vegetable tajine (red peppers, zucchinis, onions etc.)
  • Dessert : an clementine + 1 espresso

 

 

GOUTER – 4 pm

  • 2 scoops of bergamot and blackcurrant ice cream
  • a green tea

 

DINNER – 8pm

eat in a day

  • Starter : a set of Moroccan little tapas to share + a monkfish pastilla (a kind of a stuffed pastry)
  • Main : a chicken tajine
  • Dessert : a set of Moroccan deserts to share (fruits, ice-cream and other goods)

 

 

FEELS FEELS

At the end of this day, I was so stuffed I could not move. It was a real sugar festival.

I have 3 arguments for my defense:

  1. It was my first time eating Moroccan Cuisine, I had to taste everything.
  2. We were celebrating a birthday for dinner, so we went to a restaurant in a ryad and got crazy.
  3. We walked 13 000 steps that day. Walk walk walk.

When I am on holiday in a new country, I have to taste the local culinary delights. It is neither the place, nor the time to get all fussy about your diet. It is a real experience that I want to enjoy, and if I get a little overboard, well, the body reboot is here to get me back on tracks when back in Paris.

Breakfast was very good, but I got a little to much on my plate, I did not finish all of it.

Lunch was absolutely perfect, I could eat that everyday. It was lean, good proteins and full of flavors.

The meal I “regret” would be le goûter. The ice-cream was not that exceptional and was unnecessary, I did not enjoyed it that much.

Dinner was a-ma-zing. The little tapas where incredible, the pastilla and the chicken tajine as well. For dessert, I was extremely full, so I did not enjoyed it that much and ate tiny bites of each desert proposed.

This was only one day. The rest of the week, we were much more reasonable and ate mostly vegetables, tajines and grills. While still walking like crazy people (we got lost in the souk market, that definitely contributed to our crazy amount of steps).
